Six Months of Bookish Magic at The Charmed Page: Local Authors, Book Clubs, and Indie Bookstore Magic in SWLA
Share
It feels absolutely wild to say this, but The Charmed Page has officially been open for a year and a half.
A YEAR AND A HALF.
That’s eighteen months of books, local authors, book clubs, markets, poetry nights, writing workshops, craft events, Edgar the shop ghost causing suspicious nonsense, and all of us pretending our TBR piles are under control.
They are not.
As we hit the halfway point of 2026, I wanted to take a moment to look back at everything we’ve done in the past six months. The Charmed Page was created to be more than a bookstore. We are a cozy indie bookstore dedicated to supporting local authors, fostering a love of literature in Lake Charles, and creating a warm, community-centered space for readers, writers, students, teachers, librarians, and everyday book goblins.
Basically, we are part bookstore, part literary living room, part local author hype squad, and part “please do not ask how many half-read books are on the owner’s nightstand.”
What We’ve Been Up To So Far in 2026
In the first half of the year, we hosted reading journal workshops, a 2026 vision board class, Indie Ink Markets, TBR Book Club, Poetry Open Mic Nights, Bayou Writers’ Group meetings and workshops, finance and tax workshops for authors and creatives, book signings, book release parties, horror book club, Hometown Pages Book Club, craft nights, and Poetry Month zine-making.
We celebrated Jaylon J. Martin’s I Talk to Horses, Emma Page’s Haven, mystery books from Beth Savoie, and local author events during Indie Bookstore Day. We hosted workshops like Submit Your Short Works and Create Your Own Author Trifold Brochure, helping writers leave markets with more than just a business card and a prayer.
We also organized and hosted the Lake Charles Indie Book Crawl, which brought local book lovers together to celebrate indie bookstores in our community. It was a blast, and yes, we already have ideas on how to make it even better next year.
Then we packed up and headed to Central Louisiana’s Adult Book Fair in Pineville, hosted by My Secret Shelves, where we spent three days meeting readers, connecting with authors, and having an absolute blast.
And June is not done with us yet. We still have Pride Fest vending, Poetry Open Mic Night, Bayou Writers’ Group, a Linked Sisters pop-up, Everybody Scream Horror Book Club, Linocut Stamp Making, the Fear of the Sky book release with Kris Ackoury, and Make a Zine: Pride Edition on the calendar.
So yes, the first half of 2026 has been full.
And somehow, we are still standing.
Mostly.
Why We Do This
The Charmed Page was built around one big idea: local stories deserve space.
I want local authors to have shelves where their books are seen, celebrated, and not treated like an afterthought. I want readers to discover stories from their own community. I want writers to have workshops, readers to have book clubs, and both to have markets and events where they can learn, connect, and grow together.
We also carry bookish gifts like tote bags, bookmarks, and other little treasures because books are the main character, but accessories deserve their moment, too.
All of this is part of the mission: to build a cozy, welcoming literary space in Lake Charles.
One shelf, one event, one local author, and one slightly chaotic book club at a time.
The Honest Part
I am deeply grateful to everyone who has shown up for The Charmed Page.
Our regulars. Our local authors. Our book club folks. Our event attendees. The people who share our posts, tell their friends, buy a book when they can, or stop in just to say hello.
We see you, and we appreciate you more than you know.
I also want to be honest: I know the economy is hard right now, and so many of us are being more careful about where our money goes. I completely understand that. At the same time, The Charmed Page is working hard to make ends meet this month while continuing to keep this space open for our readers, writers, and local authors.
That is the not-so-cute part of owning a bookstore. Less cozy montage, more “oh no, the spreadsheet has teeth.”
Small indie bookstores do not survive on vibes alone, no matter how powerful the vibes may be. The Charmed Page survives when people choose to shop here.
So if you love having a local indie bookstore in Lake Charles, here are a few ways you can help.
If you’re in a book club, please consider ordering your books through us. Send us your upcoming picks a month or two in advance, and we can help order them, organize everything, and send invoices if needed. If you sign up your book club with us, members will receive 15% off when they preorder their book club books through The Charmed Page.
If you need books for school, English class, classroom libraries, or library collections, reach out. We can offer student discounts for McNeese students and other students, plus discounts for teachers and librarians ordering books for classrooms or libraries.
And if you have used books ready for a second life, we take used books for store credit. Your books help keep our used shelves full, give readers affordable options, and make your book piles slightly less unhinged.
Thank You for Helping Us Build This
The first half of 2026 has reminded me why The Charmed Page exists.
I wanted to create a cozy indie bookstore where local authors are celebrated, readers feel welcome, writers can connect, and Lake Charles has a literary space to call its own.
Looking back at all of this, I am proud.
Tired? Absolutely.
Occasionally haunted by a bookstore ghost named Edgar? Probably.
But proud.
Thank you for being part of this weird, wonderful, bookish little world with us. Thank you for shopping small, showing up, cheering on local authors, and helping keep the magic alive.
Here’s to the next six months at The Charmed Page.
May they be full of books, community, good stories, slightly fewer electrical issues, and absolutely no nonsense from Edgar.
Actually, who are we kidding?
There will definitely be nonsense from Edgar.
